I actually dreamt about doing this post a few weeks ago 🙂 I do not want to freak you out telling you that all of our posts are God inspired, but Oh well, they sure are. I was lying in bed, tossing & turning & hogging the entire duvet to evil myself :), when this idea popped into my sleepless brain. Doing a ‘What’s in my bag’ post. All the photographers that I adored growing up 🙂 (Oh well, more like ‘starting up’) all did this kinda post, as some time in their life. So, I decided that someday before the blogging bug left me 🙂 I would do a what’s in my bag post. For all y’all none photographers reading this post, am sure y’all are wondering why would anyone want to know the contents of my bag?
Well, this is a post whereby photographers tell about the photography gear they use, & what they use them for. I will not go into much detail on this post, but if God wills, I will be reviewing each of these pieces of gear individually on subsequent posts. So, its going to be a kinda long post…brace yourself 🙂
This is Gathoni’s camera of choice, we have had it for about a year now. Its a brilliant camera, the only downside to it is that it is a crop sensor, other than that its packed with 18 awesome MP on its sensor. It is shoots 1080p HD video, so its quite a hit with cinematographers. I would highly recommend this camera for beginners, an amazing camera to experiment with. It costs about $1,000 now. Though I hear of rumours of the 7D Mark II coming out soon, let’s keep our fingers crossed 🙂
This is my little darling beast 🙂 I have had this little monster for about 2.5 years now. One of the very best Canon ever made if you’d ask me. Sadly, Canon discontinued it a while back when they came up with the 5D Mark III , which is a wonderful improvement to the MkII. This camera has a 21MP sensor, excellent in low light condition (ISO 6,400) and yes it is full frame. It also does amazing video (1080p) such that the season finale of the popular TV show House, was filmed entirely with the Canon 5D Mark II. :). This is one camera I would highly recommend since we have used it for the past 2.5 years and it has never once failed us. Since it has been discontinued I would definitely recommend the 5D Mark III.
My love for this lens is insurmountable 🙂 Well after Gathoni’s i.e. 🙂 I did an in depth review of this lens a while ago. You can read it here.
Every time Gathoni sees this lens she breaks into her happy dance 🙂 and for us married folk, happy wife = happy life :). So, it’s correct to say that this lens makes my life better 🙂 This is Gathoni fav lens. You will most likely find it on her camera most of the time she’s shooting. This lens has so many good points it needs an entire blog just to begin to describe it. It is extremely sharp, has very little distortion, and yes it has great bokeh. Shooting at 1.4 ensures that you can shoot way past dusk with no additional lighting 🙂
This lens has a very special place in our hearts since it was our very 1st L lens 🙂 It came together with our 5D MkII so we have been having it for quite a while now. The only time this little baby comes out is during family portraits where we need to get those wide angles. Other than that; it remains safely tucked in our bag. Once in a while we use it for the set up shots for both the ceremony & reception. Though more often that not we use the 35mm.
This long baby is our most expensive buy to date….when we 1st looked at the price tag we nearly passed out 🙂 $2,500!!!!! for a lens!!!! that was ridiculous. So, Gathoni & I went home & told God that if He indeed runs the world then the least He could do was to get us this lens 🙂 And surely He did. When we 1st got this lens, we could not let it go, its an amazing lens especially when you just want to zoom in and get those intimate moments without being too close to ruin it. Gathoni uses it most of the time though, for me its too heavy, it makes my biceps sore 🙂
If I could pick one lens to shoot an entire wedding with, this would be it!!!! This is one of Canon’s top of the line lenses…the ‘Nifty fifty’ as photographers like referring it to, is a must have for any photographer, other than this; Canon also makes the non L, f1.4 & f1.8; which are excellent lenses too. One thing that blows me away about this lens is its ultra sharpness, amazing rich colours and yes the depth of field at 1.2…..totally to live for 🙂
This super lens is the culprit responsible for those uber-sweet ring images that Gathoni takes. This is our sweet macro lens. Basically this lens is used to take extreme close -ups of small details & objects. With the addition of the Image Stabiliser (IS), it ensures that your images are tack sharp with minimal shake & blur. Really great piece of lens this one is!
Let’s just say that Yongnuo saved my life!!!! When I 1st discovered these Chinese flashes, I was absolutely blown away…not only were these flashes incredible in performance, but they were absolutely affordable ($70) compared to Canon’s $550. I have used Yongnuos for the past 2 years & never have they once failed or misfired. So, if you are looking as buying speedlites, go the Chinese way 🙂
These wireless triggers are super!!! for a long time we had been using some Chinese triggers that kept on failing us. When we discovered Phottix, we found peace :). We use them when we are doing any off camera lighting & they work perfectly in all weather & you can still use them even at a distance of 150m!!!! Brilliant for on location & studio work
This wonderful invention known as a lightsphere is excellent for outdoor lighting especially at night. Mostly if you are shooting a beach or outdoor wedding where the is no ceiling to bounce off your flash, this little invention will save your life. We got ours for about $49 on B&H. Also if you are into outdoor events this is a must have.
This back pack is the stuff!!!! Gathoni & I each have our own identical bags well labelled with our initials just like the way we did in kindergarten 🙂 Some of the upsides of this backpack is that it fits snuggly our 15′ macbook at the back, tripod at the side, they can hold 2 camera bodies and even come with a removable rain cover. At only $190 its an amazing bargain 🙂
That’s all that I can come with right now guys, hopefully we will be doing an in depth review on every one of these.
For those guys who are in Kenya & its surrounding, you can order gear easily from these guys Camera Kenya (0722 764900)
