Every once a week (Friday’s to be particular) I will be running a ‘SPOTLIGHT’ post featuring creative artistes who have made their mark in our beloved country Kenya, and the world over. The list will range from photographers, actors, musicians, dancers, artists to mama mbogas. Anyone who I have come to love and respect and whose work is a source of inspiration. I will begin the 1st SPOTLIGHT by uncovering one of the most talented photographers in Kenya today; Osborne Macharia. He tends to shy away from the spotlight and it was an honour to let me interview him and share his talent and person with the whole wide world web. We come a long way with Osborne, we attended the same awesome high school, Moi Forces Academy (MFA) and also attended the same campus JKUAT. (Birds of a feather huh?). I got to ask ask Osborne some 10 crazy questions and his answers really made me laugh 🙂 Q1:: Who is Osborne Macharia, both the known & unknown?
Osborne Macharia is just a simple guy (a man of few words i have to say that before we begin this lest I have little to say). I’m the 2nd born in a family of 3, with loving folks and amazing siblings (Big brother Josh and small sister Esther). Most people know me as a photographer yet this was not anywhere in my dreams as i grew up. I’m currently a student of Architecture at JKUAT yet somewhere along the way I must have drifted and this is where I am. Q2:: What else would you be if you weren’t a Photographer?
Funny enough is if i wasn’t a photographer then I would probably be a graphic designer in an agency and not an Architect. The whole world of advertising is like a drug to me…I simply can’t get enough of it! Q3:: What were your dreams as a child?
As a child i always wanted to be an Architect. I wasn’t that bright but i loved art. I was very reserved and art was my way of talking to the world. The choice to be an architect was mostly to prove a point…that i could make it, and the thought of making MONEY while at it made it even more appealing. In high school i did my best and was called to JKUAT to pursue my dream course. It was until 4th year that i came across the work of a young Canadian photographer Joey L (See his blog here) and things changed. His lighting and concepts blew me away and the journey into photography began. I am happy I found my purpose. Q4: What would be the first thing you would do if today was your last day?
If today was my last day then I would want to get married to the woman (Peninah *Above :-)) I have been dating for the last 4yrs and just chill with her till my time was over. Q5:: If you could meet anyone in the world dead or alive who would it be and what would say to them?
Hmmm…. good question. I would have loved to meet Steve Jobs. He was my hero ever since I came across an iMac. How he thought and what he believed in actually influenced my creative decisions in a sub-conscious way. He was a minimalist and this struck a chord in me. Q6:: If you were stranded on a desert island, what three items would you take with you?
After fourth form I was persuaded to join Strathmore University to study for a Diploma in Business Information Technology. One day over lunch time i was drawing an eye and decided I would give a lady in our class. So during the afternoon class I composed my lines and everything was set. The 4pm bell rang and as guys were leaving I run after her called her name then things went downhill from there. I was shaking so much that I couldn’t even speak, plus the look she gave me even made things worse. I walked home trying to figure out what got into me. I said I would never go back to that class….eventually we became friends. Q9:: If I gave you a $1,000,000 right now what would you do with it?
First thing is i would get myself a Phase One+IQ180 digital back (see it here) with Broncolor lights then i would figure out slowly what to do with the rest Q10:: What would people be surprised to know about you?
I always tend to panic before a shoot! LOL that was interesting :-)…some more of his awesome work! And finally I was able to get one image of the man himself! truly a talented artiste! In case you would love to see more of his awesome work:
