One bright Sunday morning I sat on a church pew, listening to a young minister speak about passion, and making a career out of something that you love. He spoke of a young man who loved to paint. Unfortunately, there was nothing spectacular about his art, it looked like the next fellas. So, this young man, made a decision to lock himself in his house and paint everyday until he became the very best. This went on for 3 years, every day he worked his brushes, putting in the hours, labouring it out, in the loneliness of his house. 3 years later, this young man held his 1st art exhibition, and the world wondered where he had been hiding all along. He became an overnight legend.
This simple story impacted me so much.
It is almost 7 years since I had that simple sermon and my life never became the same again. There & then I made it my life’s purpose, to only do that which I was passionate about. Life was too short to spend myself on something I did not love doing. I was in uni then, pursuing an Engineering degree that I had little love for. I wanted to quit & follow my heart…then, I remembered the story of the painter & how he had laboured for 3 years in obscurity, and it gave me strength to stay the course, and finish my degree. About 3 years ago, I picked up a camera & started taking pictures, I fell in love, head over heels, crazy kinda love…the rest as they say is history. I read somewhere that it takes 10,000 hours to become an expert in any field…am not sure where I am in this scale, but every waking moment I have…is spent following my passion.
Some of the reasons to follow your passion & not money are…
1. Money Doesn’t Satisfy
One of the bible verses that I adore so much is Ecclesiastes 2:17
‘So I hated life, because the work that is done under the sun was grievous to me. All of it is meaningless, a chasing after the wind.’
In my brief stint here on earth, I have learned like Solomon did here above, that money doesn’t satisfy. Money can buy you a lot of cool & shiny things but unfortunately, not satisfaction. I have found a lot of fulfilment doing things that have very little to do with money. When I did what I loved, I felt fulfilled, happy, satisfied. If you are out there living your life thinking that getting all the money in the world will fulfil you, then you will be in for a rude shock (Been there & got a the T-shirt :)) . Some of the richest, most popular people in the world are the most miserable, while some of the happiest & most fulfilled people in the world have little to no material wealth. So, do not let money be a motivator, let love & passion motivate you & you shall find more fulfilment.
2. Passion Overcomes All Obstacles
Let me just put it this way, achieving your dream will cost you loads of blood, stinking sweat & painful tears. So many many times I sat up late at night, my eyes covered with burning tears, screaming at God that this was too hard. I have quit more times that I can remember, stood at the brink of throwing my camera down the balcony, it was just too hard, too hard. With God’s wonderful grace, I have always come back to holding a camera in my hand, despite all the pain, hurt & failures I have found my way back to doing what I loved most, photography. Passion will keep you, where giving up will seem like the only option. I have tried it, take my word for it please.
3. You Will Never Have To Work A Day in Your Life
I adore the adage that says
”Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life.”
Oh the truth in this one liner is earth-moving 🙂 if we all let this be our mantra then there would be no more Monday blues, fewer suicides, happier people & a better world in general. On the few occasions that I have met a person passionate about what they do, I have known it & felt it…and I would hire that person any day. Every time I hold the camera & shoot, it is never work, always a hobby…up to date I thank God for the chance to do what I love doing & then somehow we make a living out of it!!!!! Glory be to God. I would love to implore to anyone reading this post, stuck doing something that you absolutely loathe doing, and the only reason why you are stuck there ~~~~~~> is to pay your bills, then do what I did.
I was sick & tired of being sick & tired, I fell desperately to my knees & cried out to God, to give me something I love doing….He gave me a camera 🙂
4. Your Career will Most Likely Be Your Life’s Work
You will spend the larger chunk of your life in your career. Knowing this really put it all into perspective, I want to spend the larger chunk of my life doing what I love. I realised that life is too short to spend my life doing something I did not love doing. Thus I decided to make a career out of something that I loved doing.
There is no way around this, so we might as well accept the cards we are dealt. Many people go about this the wrong way because they feel like work is something they have to do rather then something they can enjoy. Once you realize that your career should be something you enjoy, then you will lead a more happy and fulfilling life.
5. What Will The World Remember You For?
Oh this is one question that I always always battle with. Allow me to kindly try to break it down. What legacy, difference will your life have made in this world. Will, you only be remembered as someone who took up space in God’s beautiful world & absolutely did nothing worth remembering or note worthy? One thing I realised is that most of the people that history remembers well, had a lot to do with passion & very little to do with money. The most famous man who ever walked the earth & also the man who made the greatest difference in this life was, Jesus Christ. He was passionate about His mission here on earth, ‘To seek & save those that were lost’. Every once I reflect upon his brief 33 years here on earth, then I am reminded about passion. Living out your life’s mission with burning, fiery, steaming-hot passion.
I do not want, to die having amassed millions, none of that will matter then.
I want to have passionately lived out my mission here on earth of Serving God & humanity. I know that the world will only remember me for what I did for others, for the sacrifice, the love, the passion I had. So, I will not let myself be too consumed by being a billionaire, that I forget to touch lives & souls with my life’s work. That will be 1st…I will live my life passionately, and hopefully touch the world with the gift that God has blessed my hands to do….
Go out…live you life passionately, touch the world!!!!!
