Everyday Gathoni & I receive so many wonderful emails from precious people looking to intern or volunteer with us so that they can learn a thing or two about photography. This is really humbling & great to see so many of you wanting to learn more about this noble profession of ours, but truth be told it would be utterly impossible for us to create opportunity for y’all & this is what we had to say….
Dear Ben & Gathoni,
First & foremost, I want to start off by saying that I absolutely adore your work, you guys have a wonderful gift, thank you for sharing it with the world. For quite some time now I have had a growing interest in photography, & seeing your photos has made me realise that I want to take my photography to the next level. Hence, I would kindly request if I could volunteer in your company as I gain experience & hopefully become a better photographer. My only payment would be the experience that I get from you guys…anything would do…I am willing to do anything to work with you guys.
Hope you will consider me…
Here’s our reply…
Dear Optimistic Intern,
Thank you so much for your email….Gathoni & I are so thrilled & humbled that you would even consider volunteering to work with us, we are grateful. Truth be told, we are a husband & wife photography team, so for now we have no particular opening for internship. As for volunteering to work with us, it is also not possible due to the nature of our weddings; we are restricted to the number of people we can allow to tag along with us during weddings. Since most, if not all, are invite only.
Our advice is simply what we did, commit yourself to learn as much as you can. There are tons of material available online to help you improve your photography skill & level. Watch as many youtube videos on the same as you can…the info is endless. Search & bookmark blogs of photographers that you would love to learn from & study their imagery & how they were able to master their art. Also practise, practise, practise as much as you can, with whatever you have in your hand, a phone, small camera, anything….shoot, shoot, shoot…And yes always, always keep God #1 in all that you do…never ever take that for granted.
Hope this helps in any way towards reaching your dream,
Ben & Gathoni
