I really can not remember baking any cake in my childhood and in my teenage years. All i can remember is seeing my wonderful, wonderful mum in the kitchen on the table with all the ingredients she needed to make a vanilla cake, which was our favourite. After she was done, all my sister and I could do was peep-toe to the sink to take the bowl that had been used to prepare the mix so that we could lick it…….and the result every other time were bad stomachaches. I know most of us can attest to that 🙂
Recently, I learnt that photography and baking were some of the things that were passed over from my parents.A couple of weeks ago, Ben and I went to visit my parents and on those random talks,Dad mentioned that he was once a photographer, which he started immediately after his O Level education but stopped once he settled in Nairobi. Mum, on the other hand has been baking wonderful and yummy sponge and rock cakes for years.
So there you go, now you know where it all started. So immediately after our honeymoon, we settled down and one thing I quickly learnt is Ben’s love for bread. Whaaaaaat only God and our shopkeeper knows how many times we buy buy bread per week considering we are only the two of us in the house. With a new oven in my kitchen ,i decided to try what i had seen my mum do for many years so that to reduce the number of trips to the shop 🙂
Here are some of the cake mixes I have been using.
Chocolate mixes are my favourites
Strawberry mix made an appearance in my kitchen this week and it did not disappoint
My ingredients: cake mix, eggs, cooking oil ,milk/water but i prefer milk.
Sieving the cake mix is key as it makes the cake more spongy and also at time the flour may have big particles.
Hand mixer is my favourite tool in my kitchen. It has made my mixing very easy, effective and efficient.
Non-stick Rossetti bake-ware pan is where I usually pour my paste ready to go to the oven
And the results 🙂
For the chocolate cake
For the strawberry cake.
This is us after a cooking session awaiting the cake to cool. Selfie moment right there.
And this is the results when hungry people see a strawberry cake 🙂
Besides photography we are also awesome bakers I guess.
