I have been thinking about blogging about this for a while, here goes my reasons why cheap is not always best when it comes to scouting for a photographer to shoot your wedding…
#1 IT’S NO REHEARSAL:
Your wedding that is. It is expected that you will only walk down the aisle once in your lifetime. Many of us will have only one shot…you cannot afford to gamble with this…Your wedding is not a rehearsal, do it right or not at all.
#2 UNCLE BOB REFERRALS
Avoid this like the plague. Uncle Bob is that relative who owns a big camera and will offer to shoot your wedding for free or something close to nothing. You cannot imagine the dread of trying to follow up on your photos after the wedding. And if you have issues on how the photos turned out, guess what…they will rudely remind you that they went out of their way to shoot your wedding for you…run, run, run!!!!
#3 SO WHO IS SHOOTING MY WEDDING?
Good question…you will definitely get to find out on your wedding day, which may be a tad bit too late. If you are hiring a company to shoot your wedding…insist on knowing the photographer who will be shooting yours…have a chat with them & get to know them, what makes them tick, their passions, love and also look at work they have shot.
#4 STYLE IS EVERYTHING!
I really get ticked off by brides who judge me without looking at my work. Some just quip you are too expensive, I want a discount!! Then I go on and ask them whether they have seen & approved of my work, most of them haven’t. Which is very sad. It is important to note that there are myriads of wedding photographers who you can chose to shoot your wedding and all of them have a specific style of shooting. Do your research & go through entire weddings shot by every photographer. Only book the photographer whose style reflects both your personalities & what it is that you love.
#5 BUDGET Vs PRIORITIES !!!
One thing I have learned over the few years I have been shooting is that a great photographer can make the simplest wedding look great while an average photographer can water down even the most grandeur weddings. So, I really feel for the couples who spend fortunes on every detail of the wedding apart from the photographer. The photographer is that one person that you are trusting with your entire wedding and if you go for a cheap photographer, then don’t expect miracles to happen to the images you will have to live with for the rest of your lives together.
#6 PHOTOSHOP WILL NOT SAVE YOUR MARRIAGE!
I get tonnes of requests from brides who come to me and ask me to edit their wedding photos (Taken by other photographers) to look like the ones they see on the blog. Well, that is like turning water into wine. Most of the images you will see from some of the best wedding photographers are barely edited; most of them are straight out of the camera. So, in any case you will think that photoshop will salvage your wedding images, then you have another thing coming. It is sad when I tell these wonderful brides that I cannot do anything to help them. Now, that you have a chance to do it right, do it before it becomes too late.
#7 IT TAKES A LOT TO BE GREAT
Much, much more goes into making great images that what meets the eye. No one sees the endless hours spent in research & perfecting the craft, the immense investment needed in getting top of the line equipment, the sacrifice it takes in following your dream, the fact that for most of us it our sole source of income and many many times the unglamorous things we must do to get the shot right. So, when you receive that quote from that great photographer…consider all these and many many more I was unable to state, before dismissing them based on cost alone.
Hope in some little way I shed more light & shared what is in my heart with you guys…
God’s tremendous blessing & mercy continuously seek you
